Feeling Defeated

Every time I hear someone get an internship offer, I can’t help but feel a little defeated. I’ve been applying but none have materialized. I came close with a start up. They were drafting an offer and we discussed logistics. I was ecstatic but they ended up retracting their decision. They hired a few full timers and no longer had the budget for interns. It was a business decision that was out of my control. I was disappointed to say the least. It was a huge blow. I thought I was done with the internship search but I’m now back to square one. Scoring an internship would have been icing on top of the cake to an otherwise great quarter. But is a priority to excel in school? It doesn’t seem to be unimportant factor in reaching my career goal.

I know how you feel, man. I went through the same ordeal, except with the full-time job search. I applied for 20+ jobs and only heard back from two, one of which was just an automated response. Never got any acknowledgement whatsoever from the others. It was really discouraging. I had to do something though, so spent my time volunteering until I was able to secure a job. It took me almost a full year though.

Doing well in school is always a priority, but companies ultimately care more about experience over education. I only focused on school, so when I graduated, I found it really hard to get a job with what was essentially a blank resume, haha. If I could do it over, I would’ve been more proactive in getting internships so that my education would’ve been balanced out with real-world work experience.
