America’s Favorite Pastime

Two Saturdays ago, September 5, 2010, I went to a Dodgers vs Giants game at Dodgers Stadium with a group of friends. It was my first time going to a baseball game in America and being in Dodgers Stadium. It was a rather impulsive decision. Around 2:00 pm, my friend asked me if I was interested in going to a baseball later on that day. I thought about it for a moment and said yes. The game was scheduled to start at 5:00 pm so we met at my house around 3:00 pm and got on our way.

I didn’t even know where Dodgers Stadium was located except that it was somewhere in downtown Los Angeles. Turns out that it was situated on a hill near the heart of downtown with the high rises visible in the distance. We arrived rather early, around 4:00 pm. We found tickets through the help of Craigslist so we stood around and waited for the seller to arrive.

I thought it was pretty clever that the stadium had entrance/exit on every tier. We entered through the gate associated with the top deck, which is where we sat. Upon walking through the gate and entering the stadium, I had a clear view of the entire stadium and the baseball diamond. The field looks smaller than I expected. It didn’t feel like I was sitting very far/high up despite being in the top deck. I got a Dodgers Dog after a few innings. I had the luck of waiting in line with the slowest cashier. A while later and $5 poorer, I had my Dodgers Dog in hand. It was a disappointment. It was nothing more than a mediocre hot dog.

Now I know why I was never really a fan of baseball. There were a handful of exciting plays which included a double play and a home run. A few fans made some impressive catches of foul balls. Other than that, the game itself was rather slow. It is worse than watching it on TV because on TV, there is at least commentary and replays. Most of the innings were scoreless and the Dodgers ended up losing with a score of 0-3.

I can now say that I’ve been to a baseball game. It’s unlikely that I would take the initiative to go to another baseball game. Nonetheless it was a good experience.
